Three years after her last journey, a new chapter in Moana’s life has emerged with “Moana 2.” This sequel presents a slightly matured version of the beloved character, who now fully embraces her identity as a wayfinder. Tasked once again by the voices of her ancestors, Moana embarks on a quest to discover the mythical island of Motufetu. She must gather her crew to break an ancient curse cast by the god Nalo, which has perpetuated division among the ocean’s inhabitants. Despite the familiar themes and enchanting landscapes, the film struggles to capture the essence of character growth that made the original story resonate so deeply.
Fans will be pleased to know that Moana is voiced once again by Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as the humorous demi-god Maui. Accompanying them is an expanded ensemble of supporting characters, presumably designed to enrich the story. However, the character development seems to take a backseat this time around. This is disheartening, especially considering the original film’s profound emphasis on personal evolution and self-discovery. It appears “Moana 2” leans into the comfort of its winning formula rather than presenting new layers to explore.
Originally intended as a Disney+ limited series, “Moana 2” underwent a transformation into a theatrical release. This shift has left some remnants of its former structure, striking an odd chord that echoes the feel of Disney’s straight-to-video offerings from the ’90s. The film retains enough of Disney’s core appeal to win over younger viewers, and it is likely to find its niche upon its eventual arrival on Disney+.
